Metropolitan Bishop Varsonophiy Welcomed in Jerusalem

Archimandrite Benedict (Gavrilyuk) of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia has been appointed as the new Metropolitan Bishop of Jerusalem for the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem. The enthronement ceremony took place on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem.

The enthronement was led by Patriarch Theophilos III and attended by other hierarchs of the Orthodox Church. During the ceremony, Bishop Varsonophiy was vested with the patriarchal mantle and given the patriarchal staff.

Bishop's Background

Bishop Varsonophiy, born in 1980, has a long history of service to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. He graduated from St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, Pennsylvania, and served as a parish priest in the United States for many years. In 2016, he was appointed as the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. As a representative, he has established close ties with the local Orthodox community.
