NASA Funds COC Project Advancing STEM Careers
August 14, 2024: $6 Million Awarded to College of the Canyons
In an effort to promote STEM careers, NASA has awarded a $6 million grant to the College of the Canyons (COC) in Santa Clarita, California. This grant will be utilized to fund the "We Empower Belonging (WEB)" project, which aims to increase representation and support for students from underrepresented groups in STEM fields. Over a period of five years, the project will provide scholarships, mentorship opportunities, and research experiences for COC students.
WEB Project Objectives
- Increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing STEM degrees
- Provide scholarships and financial assistance to support student success
- Create mentorship programs connecting students with industry professionals
- Establish research experiences to foster student engagement in STEM
- Develop a sense of community and belonging for underrepresented students in STEM
Importance of STEM Education
STEM education is essential for preparing students for the workforce of the future. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEM occupations are projected to grow by 10% over the next decade, significantly outpacing the growth rate of other fields.
However, underrepresented groups, including women, minorities, and first-generation college students, are disproportionately underrepresented in STEM fields. This disparity limits their access to high-paying and fulfilling careers.
NASA's Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
NASA is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in the STEM workforce. The WEB project is part of a broader effort by the agency to address underrepresentation in STEM fields. By supporting programs that increase access and opportunities for these students, NASA aims to create a more inclusive and equitable STEM ecosystem.
