Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who murdered George Floyd in 2020, has been sentenced to 22.5 years in prison. Chauvin was convicted of violating Floyd's civil rights and faces additional state charges for his role in the deadly arrest. The sentencing brings a measure of closure to a case that sparked widespread protests and calls for police reform across the country.
On May 25, 2020, Chauvin pinned Floyd to the ground with his knee for over nine minutes, while Floyd repeatedly gasped, "I can't breathe." Floyd, a 46-year-old Black American man, died at the scene. Chauvin's actions were captured on video, igniting outrage and protests worldwide.
In addition to Chauvin, two other former Minneapolis police officers, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng, were found guilty of violating Floyd's civil rights. Thao and Kueng face up to 20 years in prison.
